2017-07-19 The astrometric method relies on measuring the side-to-side movement of a star as it orbits about its center of gravity with another large planet. Though this movement may be too small for most telescopes to detect, the GAIA mission would be able to detect changes of up to 10 microarcseconds. We introduce a new method of searching for and characterizing extrasolar planets. We show that by monitoring the center-of-light motion of microlensing alerts using the next generation of high-precision astrometric instruments the probability of detecting a planet orbiting the lens is high.
Astrometric Method: 1. Measures precise changes in a stars position in the sky in fractions of arc seconds. ASTAP astrometric solving method (plate solving) Image: Star database: 1: Find background, noise and star level: 2: Find stars and their CCD x, y position (standard coordinates) Extract a similar amount of stars for the area of interest from the star database that matches the star density of the image. The method used to determine the x,y-to-RA,Dec coordinate transformation is somewhat complicated in practice (i.e., in the program).
