Before examining Popper’s arguments, it is essential to outline the context in which the Republic was written. Karl Popper was born in Vienna (then in Austria-Hungary) in 1902 to upper-middle-class parents. All of Popper's grandparents were Jewish, but they were not devout and as part of the cultural assimilation process the Popper family converted to Lutheranism before he was born and so he received a Lutheran baptism. Karl Popper made the serious error of reading Plato’s Republic literally, but the work is really an allegory. Read literally — that is, as a treatise on civil politics — the Republic is filled with absurdities; for example, that wives, children and property should be held in common, and that society should be governed by a ruling elite. For Karl Popper, Plato is politically dangerous, an enemy of “ the open society.” Of course, the Plato that Popper has in mind is the Plato of the Republic.
